Import regulations
With the exception of a few protected species (see below) no import permit is needed from the Federal Veterinary Office (FVO) for these animal species.
But for phytosanitary reasons an import permit is needed from the Federal Office of Agriculture for many plant-eating insects, aphids and nematodes.

Species protection inspection
No inspection is stipulated for non-protected species.

Protected butterfly species:
 Ornithoptera alexandrae Queen Alexandra's birdwing Appendix I
 Papilio chikae Luzon peacock swallowtail Appendix I
 Papilio homerus Homerus swallowtail Appendix I
 Papilio hospiton Corsican swallowtailAppendix I
 Bhutanitis spp. Bhutanitis species of swallowtail Appendix II
 Ornithoptera spp. Birdwings Appendix II
 Parnassius apollo Mountain Apollo Appendix II
 Teinopalpus spp. Teinopalpus butterflies Appendix II
 Trogonoptera spp. Birdwings Appendix II
 Troides spp. Birdwings Appendix II

An import permit issued by the FVO is needed for these protected species. The FVO must be sent an application form completed in full (form download on the right).

Conditions of species protection law
On entry into the country, the valid original CITES certificate (CITES export permit or re-export certificate must be presented. This is issued by the responsible authorities (CITES implementing authority) of the country of consignment / country of origin. 

Inspection according to species protection law
The goods may be imported into the country via any customs post with commercial goods traffic during office hours.
The following ORIGINAL documents must be presented at the customs post:
- FVO import permit
- Additional form concerning the species protection inspection office
- If necessary, export permit from the country of consignment
The animals must then be presented at the selected CITES inspection post within 2 working days. It is essential to keep the document issued by this post as evidence of legal import. Details on these inspection posts and their opening hours can be found on the right.
