Importing animal by-products (ABP) from the EU

Animal by-products (ABP) are carcasses from slaughter animals as well as other animal products which are not intended for human consumption; either whole or cut into pieces, raw or processed. They are classified into three categories depending on their potential to endanger human or animal health. To date, only category 3 products may be imported.

Category 3 (K 3) products are in particular "parts of slaughter animals which are in principle suitable for human consumption", but which for reasons of hygiene or other reasons are not intended for this purpose

No animal health permit is required for the import of animal by-products of "category 3". Each consignment must however be accompagnied by a commercial document as prescribed in the Regulation EC 142/2011 (specimen see below).

By-products of categories 1 and 2 cannot be imported normally. A special permit can however be applied for for some products, see at the corresponding chapter left on this page.
